7th Day of Unleavened Bread

Joseph F. Dumond

Isa 6:9-12 And He said, Go, and tell this people, You hear indeed, but do not understand; and seeing you see, but do not know. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn back, and be healed. Then I said, Lord, how long? And He answered, Until the cities are wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land laid waste, a desolation, and until Jehovah has moved men far away, and the desolation in the midst of the land is great.

Shabbat Zoom Meeting

There are many people in need of fellowship and who are sitting at home on Sabbath with no one to talk to or debate with. I want to encourage all of you to join us on Shabbat, and to invite others to come and join us as well. If the time is not convenient then you can listen to the teaching and the midrash after on our youtube channel.

We hope you can invite those who want to keep Torah to come and join us by hitting the link below. It is almost like a Torah teaching fellowship talk show with people from around the world taking part and sharing their insights and understandings.

We start off with some music and then some prayers and its as though you were sitting around the kitchen back in Newfoundland having a cup of coffee and all of us enjoying each other’s company. I hope you will grace us with your company someday.

This Sabbath is also the 7th Day of Unleavened Bread so we will be having a double service this Shabbat.

Sabbath March 6, 2021, will be at 10 AM Eastern for our Morning service and 2 PM for our afternoon service

We have between 60 and 100 groups joining us each week. In those groups are between one and six people listening and taking part with us. We have not done a census to know how many join. There is between 100 and 300 each week. We look forward to you joining our family and getting to know us as we get to know you.

Septennial Torah Portion

If you go to Torah Portion at our archived section, you can then go to the 4th year which is the 4th year of the Sabbatical Cycle, the one we are in now, as we state at the top of every News Letter. There you can scroll down to January 23, 2021, and see that this Shabbat we could very well be midrashing about

Gen 26
1 Samuel 6-8
Psalm 55-56
Mark 3-4:23

If you missed last weeks exciting discoveries as we studied that section you can go and watch past Shabbats on our media section.

Tracking Time

I would like to recommend the following charts for all of you to begin to use as we are now into the new year. Pauline Readon-Benjes developed these charts a number of years ago and has offered them to you on our web site for you to download and use. You can record when the moon was sighted and then begin to count the days to each Holy Day.

You can also note significant events that take place and see if a pattern is developing.

Go to this link and click on the download button. That is the button to the right of the zoom 100% in the heading line. Download it to your computer and then you can print it off on your own printer. You will notice that Pauline already has this first page filled in for you below. You can also print this one off if you like.

And these sheets can be reused each month from year to year. May they be a blessing to you as you number your days.

Psa 90:12  So teach us to number our days, so that we may bring a heart of wisdom.

Counting the Omer

Someone is surely going to ask you or say it publicly, where are we commanded to count the omer?

When you are asked this then you will take them to Lev 23:15

“You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord.

Here you are told that there are different methods of counting the 50 days. The first was to count 7 full weeks and the second was to count out the full 50 days.

Again in Deut 16:9 you are told to again COUNT. It is a commandment to count the days and or weeks. And you start from the time when the sickle is first put to the Barley grain which was done after sunset after the weekly Saturday Sabbath. This counting began with Wave Sheaf Day.

“You shall count seven weeks. Begin to count the seven weeks from the time the sickle is first put to the standing grain.

According to some the commandment ‘and you shall count for yourselves fifty days’ means to simply observe the 50th day as Shavuot while others actually declare out loud the number on each of the fifty days. A medieval Karaite Jewish practice combines two different methods of declaring the daily count. The first method is the counting of seven weeks. Each day, the number of the week and the number of the day in the week are declared. So for example, the first day is ‘first day of the first week’. The second counting method used is an overall number for each day. In this method Day one is ‘the first day’ and Day 25 is ‘the twenty-fifth day’. These two methods are used to satisfy the commandment to count seven weeks (Deuteronomy 16:9) as well as the commandment to count fifty days (Leviticus 23:16).

During each one of these days of Counting the Omer to Pentecost, Jewish tradition has developed around reading the Psalms on certain days. I find this to be very beneficial. It is customary that following the “Counting of the Omer,” one recites Psalm 67, for according to tradition, that Psalm has forty-nine words, which corresponds perfectly to the forty-nine days of the “Counting of the Omer.”

And as you meditate on and do these readings, which includes the Counting of the Omer command, keep in mind what this symbolizes. It is the counting of the Sabbatical and Jubilee Years and where we are in that cycle. We are in the twenty-fourth year in 2019, which corresponds to the twenty-fourth day of the “Counting of the Omer.”

Wave Sheaf day is so exciting to understand and so amazing to believe because it forebodes the time when we will be changed and raised up. If you want to call this the Rapture then I can except that if you are obeying Yehovah. If you’re not obeying Yehovah and you think the laws are done away with, then you will not be in this resurrection or raptured. You will be told to be gone you workers of lawlessness, I never knew you.

We will speak more about this as Pentecost draws closer. The Feast of Oaths, the 8th day and the Jubilee year.

When you count from the Wave offering of the barley to Pentecost it is called the counting of the Omer. You are to count each day up to the 50th day. This Sunday, March 31, 2019, is day eight. We are to count the Omer. And in all my haste the past couple of weeks, I forgot to mention this to you.

As I said, this is the most special time of year for me and in years past I couldn’t put my finger on exactly why, other than it had something to do with Yehshua’s resurrection and waiting in anticipation for Shavuot. While I cannot put into words how my understanding of this has grown, all I can say is that “it clicked!” and “now I get it!”, at least more than before. Understanding follows obedience. So OBEY and learn. You learn by doing as we are told in James.

James 2:18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

All 50 days and each of the Psalms can be found at the back of our book Remembering the Sabbatical year of 2016

Portends to 2021

It was a year ago this March 11, in 2020, that we were keeping Passover ahead of most of our brethren. On the day WHO declared a world wide pandemic.

One Year later and over 2,563,396 have died around the world. 518,758 deaths alone have occurred in the most advanced and most powerful nation on earth.  The next leading nations in the death count are 259,271 deaths in Brazil, followed by  188,044 deaths  in Mexico and then 157,435 deaths India.

I would expect the least hygiene nations to have the higher death rates but it is not the case. When i look at those nations with the most cases I see the follow list led by the USA and then the United Kingdom taking fifth spot.

 28,773,799 US

11,156,923 India

10,718,630 Brazil
4,241,970 Russia
4,213,733 United Kingdom

And then I look at the population of each place.

USA 331,420,000

UK 67,610,000

India 1,393,409,038

Brazil 213,993,437

Russia 145,912,025

So why has the USA and the UK the most case amongst all the nations and the most deaths even though they are the most advanced and the richest of all nations?

And I remember in horror last year hearing the sky rocketing numbers of Italian that were dying at that time. Italy is currently at 2,999,119 Italy and in 7th spot over all as of today.

2020, the year we had been warning you about as being the start of judgment the destruction of Israel began with a huge GONG that no one in the world could miss. 2020 was the middle of this 70th Jubilee cycle which is what Daniel 9 was warning us about.

While many were writing and teaching about conspiracies for the cause of the virus and others denying it was real and then still others screaming about the horrors of using vaccines, Sightedmoon.com kept telling you, despite the push back, that this was a curse coming directly from Yehovah.

In the same way while many were claiming global warming as false science and fake news, Sightedmoon.com was telling you this too was a curse directly come from Yehovah.

And before this many were claiming that ISIS was a CIA front to take over the Middle East, while Sightedmoon.com was stating this was amongst the first of 5 curses that are coming from Yehovah.

Since 2005, Sightedmoon.com has been warning you of these curses and when they would come. We have been so sure Yehovah and HIs promises, that we even stated the the curse of the sword would begin May 31st, 2020. Then on May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered and by the weekend of May 31, 2020 there were riots across the USA and they spread around the world.

Those riots spread and kept developing up until the USA elections in November and they culminated in the riots on the Capitol on January 6, and the Police state that engulfed the inauguration January 20, 2021. Today as I write this, March 4, 2021, there are heighten preparations for a possible attack or insurrection in Washington due to reports coming from Q-Anon, the host of many false reports that almost half the USA population belief to be true and or where they get their information from.

When WHO made their Pandemic declaration last year on Passover, I was very aware of and looking for anything to happen this year as we kept Passover February 28, 2021. What took place on that date this year, and are those event indicators of what to expect this coming year?

President Trump made his first speech since leaving office.

In a sprawling hour and a half keynote address closing out the Conservative Political Action Conference Sunday night, former President Donald Trump delivered a speech filled with many of the same false election fraud claims that he has repeated since losing the election to President Joe Biden in November.

His false claims that the election was “rigged” is what Democrats and many others have said led to the deadly Capitol attack carried out by his supporters not even two months ago, which led to his second impeachment.

Trump, at his first speech since leaving office in January, also looked to reassert his grip on the Republican Party and portray of sense of unity—a message that was immediately muddied by the fact that he also repeatedly targeted members of his own party, including at one point listing every Republican who supported impeaching him for his role inciting the Capitol attack, which the former president did not address.

The understanding I have is based on the curses of Lev 26 for not obeying Yehovah and how they are connected to the Jubilee cycles spoken of in Lev 25.

We have focused on the sword aspect of Lev 26 and we did not focus enough on the other two parts of this 4th curse.

Lev 26:24  then I will walk contrary to you and will punish you seven times more for your sins.

Lev 26:25  And I will bring a sword on you that shall execute the vengeance of the covenant. And when you are gathered inside your cities, I will send the plague among you. And you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

Lev 26:26  When I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight. And you shall eat and not be satisfied.

Lev 26:27  And if you will not for all of this listen to Me, but will walk contrary to Me,

Lev 26:28  then I will walk contrary to you also in fury. And I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.

Lev 26:29  And you shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat.

Yehovah has listed them as Sword, Plague and Famine, and because we do not repent that famine will grow until we begin to eat our own flesh and blood.

With this biblical knowledge in mind we also have the following reports for you to keep in mind. First of all we have the UN report from December 4, 2020.

Likewise, David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), warned of alarming global hunger and food insecurity, with the number of people “marching towards starvation” spiking from 135 million to 270 million as the pandemic unfolded.  He stressed that 2021 will be catastrophic.  “Famine is literally on the horizon and we are talking about the next few months,” he said.  Noting how the WFP stepped in to deliver aid when the global airline industry shut down at the start of the pandemic, he warned anew that 2021 risks becoming the worst humanitarian crisis year since the founding of the United Nations, “and we will have to step up”.

Striking a similar note, Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said that in the absence of humanitarian assistance the lives of 235 million people are at stake — a 40 per cent increase, with poverty rising for the first time in 20 years while life expectancy will fall.  It would be a significant achievement to avert a major famine.  Despite $4 billion raised so far for the Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19, and some $2 billion distributed in social protection payments, the difference being made is much too small in relation to the challenge.

Now that the vaccines are being rolled out and the death rates are dropping, there are a number or variants that have risen up.  Do not forget what we are told would come about in this regard.

Deu 28:20  Jehovah shall send on you cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed, and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings by which you have forsaken Me.

Deu 28:21  Jehovah shall make the plague cling to you until He has consumed you from off the land where you go to possess it.

Deu 28:22  Jehovah shall strike you with lung disease and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew. And they shall pursue you until you perish.

Deu 28:23  And your heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth that is under you iron.

Deu 28:24  Jehovah shall make the rain of your land powder and dust. It shall come down from the heavens on you until you are destroyed.

Deu 28:58  If you will not observe to do all the words of this Law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, JEHOVAH YOUR GOD,

Deu 28:59  then Jehovah will make your plagues remarkable, and the plagues of your seed great and persistent plagues; with evil and long-lasting sicknesses.

Deu 28:60  Also, He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt of which you were afraid. And they shall cling to you.

Deu 28:61  Also, every sickness and every plague which isnot written in the book of this Law, Jehovah will bring them on you until you are destroyed.

Deu 28:62  And you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of the heavens for multitude, because you would not obey the voice of Jehovah your God.

Deu 28:63  And it shall be, as Jehovah rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you, so Jehovah will rejoice over you to destroy you and to bring you to nothing. And you shall be plucked from off the land where you go to possess it.

Before we get into the next few reports from the world news, I want to again show you what Yehovah said in Deut 28 on top of what you have already read in Lev 26.

Deu 28:53  And you shall eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, which Jehovah your God has given you, in the siege and in the anguish with which your enemies shall distress you.

Deu 28:54  The man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his sons which he has left;

Deu 28:55  so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his sons whom he shall eat, because he has nothing left to him in the siege and in the anguish with which your enemies shall distress you in all your gates.

Deu 28:56  The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not have ventured to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,

Deu 28:57  and toward her young one who comes out from between her feet, and toward her sons whom she shall bear. For she shall eat them secretly for lack of all things, in the siege and anguish with which your enemies shall distress you in your gates.

The price of corn and soybeans are sky rocketing. The cost of food is going to go up across the board. If we remember that many are laid off from work due to COVID 19 and the Government subsidies that have been given out are now running out. New ones are on the horizon, and yet many people are being evicted for non payment of rent and mortgages.

The poor availability of corn for the short term is creating the sharp rise in corn prices. The driving force behind this is the Argentinian export restriction. Wheat also relies on slower exports from Russia.
In the 2 shorter last weeks of 2020, activity on the grain futures market in Paris was limited. The wheat price gradually rose, at least for the first contract to expire (March 2021). In Chicago things went faster. For wheat, the decision by the Russian government to restrict exports will have a strong influence on the market from mid-February. Within Europe, France’s very moderate 2020 wheat harvest has left its mark on supply and demand. There is now a greater demand on German wheat, although Germany has also had to deal with lower production than before.

Corn prices rose rapidly, especially on the Chicago market, the March contract price made significant progress from the previous week. It is 15% higher than at the beginning of December. This is where the Argentinian government’s decision to suspend maize exports plays a role. A very poor upcoming harvest is expected, due to drought.

From the 2020 harvest, almost 90% of the 38.5 million tonnes available for export has already been exported. The intention is to reserve the remainder to ensure availability for domestic needs. Given the currently limited availability of maize in both Brazil and Ukraine, the maize buyer now has to turn to American suppliers. This is especially true for China, which is said to have had a very disappointing 2020 harvest itself and, according to Rabobank, is facing rapidly shrinking reserves. The underlying cause of China’s great and growing demand is the ongoing reconstruction of the pig sector. This one suffered a huge setback from the outbreak of African swine fever.

I would now like to show you the soybean futures for the past 5 years and you can see something is going on.

Here are the corn futures for the past 10 years.

In the news lately have been reports of the US Treasuries ticking upwards. They have been ticking up very strongly. What does this mean?

Investors are facing a couple of quandaries triggered by the rise in government bond yields. The move is putting pressure on them to look for answers.

Quandary No. 1: The prospect of a robust economic recovery in the second half, with or without a government stimulus, is leading to a selloff in U.S. Treasuries and other government bonds.

As a result, yields are rising across the board (yields move inversely to prices). But these rising yields make bonds more attractive and increase the prospect of central bank action to raise rates—both of which spell bad news for stocks.

Quandary No. 2: Another reason bond yields are rising is that investors are starting to worry about inflation picking up again, and they want yields to reflect that concern.

Policymakers at the Federal Reserve don’t seem to share these worries, and keep protesting (too much?) they are going to hold rates at rock bottom. Deflation is still as big a worry as inflation, they say. More important right now, according to Fed officials, is reducing unemployment. That means not only bringing down the headline rate but ensuring that the decline benefits workers across all sectors.

But inflation expectations have risen above the Fed’s 2% target and one traditional harbinger of higher inflation is expectations becoming untethered.

I find this fascinating: examine the symbol FR:T10Y2Y, the 10-year rate minus the 2-year rate. This concoction has done a crackerjack job of predicting every single recession, and the most recent is no exception. I have tinted each instance when this data point went negative, and then reversed to highlight the “V” bounce in this spread.

The naïve observer might think, oh, peachy keen, the badness is behind us. Not at all. The badness follows. And it isn’t here yet. But it will be. I’ve circled with green where we are now, and prior instances where we were roughly in the same place following the bounce. I have also put the years of those prior mean greenies, and every single year was an economic and market cataclysm.

The USA is trying to hold rates down to give the economy a chance to recover once the vaccines have been given to the majority of the population. Canadian banks just raised their mortgage rates by .25%.

What does all of this mean? I am not an economist nor am I giving any financial advice. I have lost some and made some in the stock market.

The national debt by year should be compared to the size of the economy as measured by the gross domestic product. That gives you the debt-to-GDP ratio. That ratio is important because investors worry about default when the debt-to-GDP ratio is greater than 77%—that’s the tipping point.

The World Bank found that if the debt-to-GDP ratio exceeded 77% for an extended period of time, it slowed economic growth.

Debt in Billions            Debt-to-GDP Ratio    Major Events by Presidential term

You will of course notice that the magical number of 77% was crossed way back in 2009 and we are now past the 136% mark or nearly double the tipping point.

Again I am not qualified in anyway to give financial advice. But in 2008 I was on a speaking tour with The Prophecy Club. On that tour I warned them of the coming economic collapse, not because of what the Jubilee Cycles showed me, but because of the dangers I saw in the economy. That fall of 2008 the collapse began.

But now, today March 4, 2021, with the confidence of May 31st, 2020 understandings and the year of 2020 understanding behind me, I look to see Yehovah do exactly as He has said He would do in Lev 26 and Deut 28 which we have listed above.

With our knowledge of the Jubilee Cycle showing us that war must come in this Sabbatical Cycle, and only 2 years left before we enter the Sabbatical year, there is not much time for famine and war to come. And they will come.

Israel fell to the Assyrians in 723 BC. The 6th year of the 4th Sabbatical Cycle.

Yehshua was also killed on the 4th day of the week and died in the late afternoon.

We are told over and over how you can survive this time in front of us. This time of famine and sword and plague is spoken of coming and being sent by Yehovah.

Eze 14:12  The Word of Jehovah came again to me, saying,

Eze 14:13  Son of man, when a land sins against Me by traitorous betraying, then I will stretch out My hand on it, and will break the staff of its bread, and will send famine on it, and will cut off man and beast from it.

Eze 14:14  And though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver only their own souls by their righteousness, says the Lord Jehovah.

Eze 14:15  If I cause destroying beasts to come through the land, and they spoil it so that it is deserted, so that no one may pass through because of the beasts,

Eze 14:16  though these three men were in its midst, as I live, says the Lord Jehovah, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters. They only shall be delivered, but the land shall be deserted.

Eze 14:17  Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it;

Eze 14:18  though these three men were in it, as I live, says the Lord Jehovah, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.

Eze 14:19  Or if I send a plague into that land, and pour out My fury on it in blood, to cut off man and beast from it;

Eze 14:20  though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, says the Lord Jehovah, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter. They shall only deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

Eze 14:21  For so says the Lord Jehovah: How much more when I send My four evil judgments on Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the destroying beast, and the plague, to cut off man and beast from it.

Eze 14:22  Yet, behold, there shall be left a remnant in it that shall be brought out, sons and daughters. Behold, they shall come out to you, and you shall see their way and their doings. And you shall be comforted concerning the evil that I brought on Jerusalem, for all that I have brought on it.

Eze 14:23  And they shall comfort you when you see their way and their doings. And you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, says the Lord Jehovah.

The next question some of you should be asking is then, “What is righteousness?”

Psa 119:172  My tongue shall speak Your Word, for all Your Commandments are righteousness.

Psalms 119:86  All Your Commandments are faithful; they persecute me with lying; help me.

Psalms 119:138  In Your testimonies You have commanded righteousness and faithfulness exceedingly.

Psalms 119:142  Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your Law is the truth.

Romans 7:12  So indeed the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

Romans 7:14  For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

The Law is not nailed to some fictitious tree nor done away. You must keep it and you must start today. YOu no longer can put this off. Your family is at stake.

We are told Yehovah is going to be furious and what do you do about it?

Eze 14:19  Or if I send a plague into that land, and pour out My fury on it in blood, to cut off man and beast from it;

Lev 26:28  then I will walk contrary to you also in fury. And I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.

You are told to get out of the way.

Isa 26:20  Come, my people, enter into your rooms and shut your doors around you; hide for a little moment, until the fury has passed by.

Let me close with the siege of Jerusalem as told by Josephus.

Throughout the city people were dying of hunger in large numbers, and enduring unspeakable sufferings. In every house the merest hint of food sparked violence, and close relatives fell to blows, snatching from one another the pitiful supports of life. No respect was paid even to the dying; the ruffians [anti-Roman zealots] searched them, in case they were concealing food somewhere in their clothes, or just pretending to be near death. Gaping with hunger, like mad dogs, lawless gangs went staggering and reeling through the streets, battering upon the doors like drunkards, and so bewildered that they broke into the same house two or three times in an hour. Need drove the starving to gnaw at anything. Refuse which even animals would reject was collected and turned into food. In the end they were eating belts and shoes, and the leather stripped off their shields. Tufts of withered grass were devoured, and sold in little bundles for four drachmas.

But why dwell on the commonplace rubbish which the starving were driven to feed upon, giver that what I have to recount is an act unparalleled in the history of either the Greeks or the barbarians, and as horrible to relate as it is incredible to hear? For my part I should gladly have omitted this tragedy, lest I should be suspected of monstrous fabrication. But there were many witnesses of it among my contemporaries; and besides, I should do poor service to my country if I were to suppress the agonies she went through.

Among the residents of the region beyond Jordan was a woman called Mary, daughter of Eleazar, of the village of Bethezuba (the name means “House of Hyssop”). She was well off, and of good family, and had fled to Jerusalem with her relatives, where she became involved with the siege. Most of the property she had packed up and brought with her from Peraea had been plundered by the tyrants [Simon and John, leaders of the Jewish war-effort], and the rest of her treasure, together with such foods as she had been able to procure, was being carried by their henchmen in their daily raids. In her bitter resentment the poor woman cursed and abused these extortioners, and this incensed them against her. However, no one put her to death either from exasperation or pity. She grew weary of trying to find food for her kinsfolk. In any case, it was by now impossible to get any, wherever you tried. Famine gnawed at her vitals, and the fire of rage was ever fiercer than famine. So, driven by fury and want, she committed a crime against nature. Seizing her child, an infant at the breast, she cried, “My poor baby, why should I keep you alive in this world of war and famine? Even if we live till the Romans come, they will make slaves of us; and anyway, hunger will get us before slavery does; and the rebels are crueler than both. Come, be food for me, and an avenging fury to the rebels, and a tale of cold horror to the world to complete the monstrous agony of the Jews.” With these words she killed her son, roasted the body, swallowed half of it, and stored the rest in a safe place. But the rebels were on her at once, smelling roasted meat, and threatening to kill her instantly if she did not produce it. She assured them she had saved them a share, and revealed the remains of her child. Seized with horror and stupefaction, they stood paralyzed at the sight. But she said, “This is my own child, and my own handiwork. Eat, for I have eaten already. Do not show yourselves weaker than a woman, or more pitiful than a mother. But if you have pious scruples, and shrink away from human sacrifice, then what I have eaten can count as your share, and I will eat what is left as well.” At that they slunk away, trembling, not daring to eat, although they were reluctant to yield even this food to the mother. The whole city soon rang with the abomination. When people heard of it, they shuddered, as though they had done it themselves.
