Happy Shmita Year of 5859 Or Is It Adar Bet?

Joseph F. Dumond

Isa 6:9-12 And He said, Go, and tell this people, You hear indeed, but do not understand; and seeing you see, but do not know. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn back, and be healed. Then I said, Lord, how long? And He answered, Until the cities are wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land laid waste, a desolation, and until Jehovah has moved men far away, and the desolation in the midst of the land is great.

Shalom and Rosh Chodesh to the Royal Family of Yehovah,

Today after Sunset, Tuesday, February 21, will be the first day of the Shmita Year of Yehovah Biblical Calendar. The New Moon has been sighted. This means it is the 1st day of the new month. The question is is it the 1st month of the new year or the 13th month of the remaining year?

Let’s note the moon being sighted first.

Becca Biderman of New Moon and Ancient Path reported on the New moon be seen.

For those of you who may not know,  Every month, I try to make a live video of the new moon at the moment it is spotted in the Israeli night skies.  The channel’s name is Ancient Path New Moon if you’d like to subscribe to be live with me when the moon is seen. There’s also a new video up called “On the Barley Search.”  It has information about the current condition of the barley.

The new moon was seen at 17:56 p.m.

Devorah’s Date Tree reported:

Dear Friends,

Our team of observers have sighted the New Moon from Israel this evening, Tuesday, 21 February 2023, thus marking the beginning of the month!

The New Moon was sighted from:

* Jerusalem (Rechavia) 5:36pm by Devorah Gordon, followed by Gil Ashendorf

* Jerusalem (Givat Ram) 5:39pm by Roy Hoffman

* Haifa (Kiryat Chaim) at 5:47pm by Ephraim Amnon

* Beer Sheva at 5:59pm by Yochanan Zaqantov

* Tiberias at 5:36pm by Dennis Chkolnik

The photo at the top of this report was taken from our observation point in Jerusalem this evening.

As days in the Biblical Calendar are from sunset to sunset, Rosh Chodesh (lit. head of the month), i.e. the first day of the month, begins when the New Moon has been sighted, and continues until sunset the following day. Rosh Chodesh a celebratory day (Num 10:10; Hosea 2:11), which was traditionally commemorated by blowing the shofar (Num 10:10; Psalm 81:4[3]), having a festive meal (1 Samuel 20:5, 24), and worshiping at the Beit HaMikdash (Temple) (Isaiah 66:23; Ezekiel 46:3) with a special sacrifice (Num 28:11-15; 2Chronicles 2:3; Ezra 3:4-5, Ezekiel 45:17, Ezekiel 46:6).

Now lets look at the state of the barley.

First of all you must note that Devorah and her barley searchers have not even begun to plan to look for the barley until the end of this coming month. They are not watching the state of the land.

Becca has been watching.

Let us first note the barley scale and when it will be at certain stages.

As of this Newsletter, the Barley is Aviv; then it must be ripe by Wave Sheaf day, which is the Sunday during the Days of Unleavened Bread. This year that day will be Sunday, March 12. I am using Torah Calendar because they are very accurate with the crescent moon, but they go by the equinox, so they are a month behind us.

Sunday, March 12, is the potential wave sheaf day. This means we have 12 more days from today for the barley to ripen. If it is not ready by this date, then we must wait until April 9, 2023. From today February 21, 2023, until April 9, 2023, is 29 + 18 = 47 Days

Now look at the barley growth scale and count back 47 days from when the barley is ripe. So 99 – 47 = 34 to 42, which is just in the early booting stage. But Becca is reporting the barley is already shattering. Now go the other way and consider where the barley will be in 47 days from now, counting from the dough stage. It will be shattered and on the ground.

Becca has reported that she has barley that is already shattering (past 99) and some that are already not divisible by the thumbnail, meaning it has formed a seed (91-99) and still others stocks that are in the dough stage (81-89). And that this field is much like the one that Randy and I looked at with her last year, meaning that some of the field is ripe and the rest is not.

So, how much barley do we need?

Lev 23:9  And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

Lev 23:10  Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, When you have come into the land which I give to you, and shall reap the harvest of it, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest.

Lev 23:11  And he shall wave the sheaf before Jehovah to be received for you. On the next day after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

Lev 23:12  And you shall offer that day when you wave the sheaf, a male lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering to Jehovah.

Lev 23:13  And its food offering shall be two-tenths part of fine flour mixed with oil, a fire offering to Jehovah for a sweet savor. And the drink offering of it shall be of wine, the fourth part of a hin.

Lev 23:14  And you shall eat neither bread, nor parched grain, nor green ears, until the same day, until you have brought an offering to your God. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

The English word sheaf is the Hebrew word Omer.

2) sheaf

יוֹם הֲנָפַת הָעֹמֶר Yom Hanafat Ha’omer (Day of the Waving of the Sheaf). When the Temple stood, this day marked the official commencement of the grain harvest (Deuteronomy 16:7) and sheaves of barley were cut and brought to the Temple as a wave-offering (Leviticus 23:9-14). This day also marks the beginning of the 50-day count to חַג הַשָּׁבֻעוֹת Shavuot(Pentecost; Feast of Weeks). Yom Hanafat Ha’omer is counted as Day 1 and Shavuot as Day 50.

Two Liters is what is called for. TWO LITERS. Here is a picture of a 2 liter Coke bottle so you know how much Barley is needed to make this wave offering.

Devorah and most of the Karaite groups say you must have fields and fields of ripe barley before you can make the wave sheaf offering. That is a man-made takanot. It is not found in Torah. You are to present to Yehovah the VERY FIRST FRUITS of the barley.

Where is Aviv Mentioned in the Hebrew Bible?

The story of the Exodus relates “This day you are going out in the the month of the Aviv.” (Ex 13:4).

To commemorate that we left Egypt in the month of the Aviv, we are instructed to bring the Passover sacrifice and celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Chag HaMatzot) at this time of year. In Dt 16:1 we are commanded:

“Keep the month of the Aviv and make the Passover (sacrifice) to Yehovah your God at night, because in the month of the Aviv, Yehovah your God took you out of Egypt”.

Similarly, we are commanded in Ex 23:15,

“You will keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread; seven days you will eat unleavened bread, as I have commanded you, at the time of the month of the Aviv, because in it you went out of Egypt.”

The same is commanded in Ex 34:18,

“You will keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread; seven days you will eat unleavened bread, as have I commanded you, at the time of the month of the Aviv, because in the month of the Aviv you went out of Egypt.”

What is Aviv?

Aviv indicates a stage in the development of the barley crops. This is clear from Ex 9:31-32 which describes the devastation caused by the plague of hail:

“And the flax and the barley were smitten, because the barley was Aviv and the flax was Giv’ol. And the wheat and the spelt were not smitten because they were dark (Afilot).”

The above passage relates that the barley crops were destroyed by the hail while the wheat and spelt were not damaged. To understand the reason for this we must look at how grain develops. When grains are early in their development they are flexible and have a dark green color. As they become ripe they take on a light yellowish hue and become more brittle. The reason that the barley was destroyed and the wheat was not is that the barley had reached the stage in its development called Aviv and as a result had become brittle enough to be damaged by the hail. In contrast, the wheat and spelt were still early enough in their development, at a stage when they were flexible and not susceptible to being damaged by hail. The description of the wheat and spelt as “dark” (Afilot) indicates that they were still in the stage when they were deep green and had not yet begun to lighten into the light yellowish hue which characterizes ripe grains. In contrast, the barley had reached the stage of Aviv at which time it was no longer “dark” and at this point it probably had begun to develop golden streaks.

Parched Aviv

We know from several passages that barley which is in the state of Aviv has not completely ripened, but has ripened enough so that its seeds can be eaten parched in fire. Parched barley was a commonly eaten food in ancient Israel and is mentioned in numerous passages in the Hebrew Bible as either “Aviv parched (Kalui) in fire” (Lev 2,14) or in the abbreviated form “parched (Kalui/ Kali)” (Lev 23:14; Jos 5:11; 1Sam 17:17; 1 Samuel 25:18; 2 Samuel 17:28; Ruth 2:14).

While still early in its development, barley has not yet produced large enough and firm enough seeds to produce food through parching. This early in its development, when the “head” has just come out of the shaft, the seeds are not substantial enough to produce any food. At a later stage, the seeds have grown in size and have filled with liquid. At this point the seeds will shrivel up when parched and will only produce empty skins. Over time the liquid is replaced with dry material and when enough dry material has amassed the seeds will be able to yield “barley parched in fire”.

Aviv and the Harvest

The month of the Aviv is the month which commences after the barley has reached the stage of Aviv. 2-3 weeks after the beginning of the month the barley has moved beyond the stage of Aviv and is ready to be brought as the “wave-sheaf offering” (Hanafat HaOmer). The “wave-sheaf offering” is a sacrifice brought from the first stalks cut in the harvest and is brought on the Sunday which falls out during Passover (Chag HaMatzot). This is described in Lev 23:10-11,

“When you come to the land which I give you, and harvest its harvest, you will bring the sheaf of the beginning of your harvest to the priest. And he will wave the sheaf before Yehovah so you will be accepted; on the morrow after the Sabbath the priest will wave it.”

From this it is clear that the barley, which was Aviv at the beginning of the month, has become harvest-ready 15-21 days later (i.e by the Sunday during Passover). Therefore, the month of the Aviv can not begin unless the barley has reached a stage where it will be harvest-ready 2-3 weeks later.

That the barley must be harvest-ready 2-3 weeks into the month of the Aviv is also clear from Dt 16:9 which states:

“From when the sickle commences on the standing grain you will begin to count seven weeks.”

From Lev 23:15 we know that the seven weeks between Passover (Chag Hamatzot) and Pentecost (Shavuot) begin on the day when the wave-sheaf offering is brought (i.e. the Sunday which falls out during Passover):

“And you shall count from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day you bring the sheaf of waving; they will be seven complete Sabbaths.”

Therefore, the “sickle commences on the standing grain” on the Sunday during Passover, i.e. 2-3 weeks after the beginning of the month of the Aviv. If the barley is not developed enough so that it will be ready for the sickle 2-3 weeks later, then the month of the Aviv can not begin and we must wait till the following month.

It should be noted that not all the barley ripens in the Land of Israel at the same time. The wave-sheaf offering is a national sacrifice brought from the first fields to become harvest-ready. However, the first-fruit offerings brought by individual farmers can vary in ripeness anywhere from “Aviv parched in fire” to fully ripe grain which may be brought “crushed” or “coarsely ground”. This is what is meant in Lev 2:14,

“And when you bring a first-fruit offering to Yehovah; you shall bring your first-fruit offering as Aviv parched in fire or crushed Carmel” (Carmel is grain which has hardened beyond Aviv to the point where it can be “crushed” or “coarsely ground”).

All of the above passages have been translated directly from the Hebrew and it is worth noting that the King James translators seem to have only understood the various Hebrew agricultural terms very poorly. In Lev 2:14 they translated Carmel as “full ears” and “Aviv” as “green ears” whereas in Lev 23:14 they translated Carmel as “green ears”!

In summation, barley which is in the state of Aviv has 3 characteristics:

  1. It is brittle enough to be destroyed by hail and has begun to lighten in color (it is not “dark”).
  2. The seeds have produced enough dry material so it can be eaten parched.
  3. It has developed enough so that it will be harvest-ready 2-3 weeks later.

We are told in the New Testament that once the grain is ready it is harvested. It is not put off.

Mar 4:26  And He said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;

Mar 4:27  and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knows not how.

Mar 4:28  For the earth brings out fruit of itself, first the blade, then the ear, after that the full grain in the ear.

Mar 4:29  But when the fruit has been brought out, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.

We are also told in Deuteronomy that we are to count to the Feast of Weeks, Shavuot, from the time we begin to put the grain to the sickle. And we put the grain to the sickle the day we make the wave sheaf offering. So you cannot cut it and store it. If you are cutting it and then storing it until wave sheaf day, then you are too late.

Lev 23:14  And you shall eat neither bread, nor parched grain, nor green ears, until the same day, until you have brought an offering to your God. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Deu 16:9  You shall count seven weeks to yourselves. Begin to count the seven weeks from the time you began to put the sickle to the grain.

It is the month of Green Ears. AVIV. It is not the month of ripe barley. It is the month of Green Ears. And because of this fact, the barley was to be roasted to remove any moisture in it before being ground up. This is as explained above in the Parched Grains.

If we go out and there is not enough barley to make the 2-liter wave offering, then, we will add an extra month and keep Passover the next month. But as of right now, I will be keeping Passover on March 8, 2023 having prepared for it on the 14th of Aviv or March 7. You are free to decide what you and your house will be doing. If I am wrong, then I can keep it the month after. If you are wrong and realize it later, you will not be able to keep Passover. It will be gone. So weigh the evidence and then decide.

This also means we are now entering in the 7th Year of rest. The Sabbatical Year. You are commanded not to plant in this 7th year. You are not to harvest. You can eat what grows of itself. You are commanded to stock up in the 6th year. You still have time to stock up on foods right now. You are commanded to forgive debts in the Sabbatical Year and let your slaves go free. And you are commanded to read the Torah on the first day of Sukkot in the Sabbatical Year for all to hear.

Lev 25:1  And Jehovah spoke to Moses in Mount Sinai, saying,

Lev 25:2  Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath to Jehovah.

Lev 25:3  You shall sow your field six years, and you shall prune your vineyard six years, and gather in the fruit of it.

Do not plant or harvest.

Lev 25:4  But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest to the land, a sabbath for Jehovah. You shall neither sow your field, nor prune your vineyard.

Lev 25:5  You shall not reap that which grows of its own accord of your harvest, neither gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It is a year of rest to the land.

Lev 25:6  And the sabbath of the land shall be food for you, for you and for your servant, and for your slave woman and for your hired servant, and for your stranger who stays with you,

Lev 25:7  and for your cattle, and for the beast that is in your land, shall all the increase of it be for food.

Stock up in the 6th year.

Lev 25:19  And the land shall yield its fruits, and you shall eat your fill and dwell in it in safety.

Lev 25:20  And if you shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? Behold, we shall not sow nor gather in our increase!

Lev 25:21  Then I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years.

Lev 25:22  And you shall sow the eighth year, and eat of old fruit until the ninth year; until its fruits come in, you shall eat the old fruit.

Forgiving debts and releasing slaves.

Deu 15:1  At the end of every seven years you shall make a release.

Deu 15:2  And this is the manner of the release. Every man who has a loan to his neighbor shall release it. He shall not exact it from his neighbor, or from his brother, because it is called Jehovah’s release.

Deu 15:3  You may exact it from a foreigner, but your hand shall release that which is yours with your brother,

Deu 15:4  except when there shall be no poor among you. For Jehovah shall greatly bless you in the land which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it,

Deu 15:5  only if you carefully listen to the voice of Jehovah your God to be careful to do all these commandments which I command you today.

Deu 15:6  For Jehovah your God blesses you as He promised you. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.

Deu 15:7  If there is among you a poor man of one of your brothers inside any of your gates in your land which Jehovah your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother.

Deu 15:8  But you shall open your hand wide to him, and shall surely lend him enough for his need, that which he lacks.

Deu 15:9  Beware that there is not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand, and your eye may be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing. And he may cry to Jehovah against you, and it is sin to you.

Deu 15:10  You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing Jehovah your God shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you put your hand to.

Deu 15:11  For the poor shall never cease out of the land. Therefore, I command you saying, You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land.

Deu 15:12  If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you.

Deu 15:13  And when you send him out free from you, you shall not let him go away empty.

Deu 15:14  You shall richly bestow on him from your flock, and from your grain floor, and from your winepress; with what Jehovah your God has blessed you, you shall give to him.

Deu 15:15  And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Jehovah your God redeemed you. Therefore I command you this thing today.

Deu 15:16  And if he says to you, I will not go away from you, because he loves you and your house, because it has been good for him with you;

Deu 15:17  then you shall take an awl and put it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. And also to your slave-girl you shall do so.

Deu 15:18  It shall not seem hard to you when you send him away from you free, for he has been worth a double hired servant in serving you six years. And Jehovah your God shall bless you in all that you do.

Deu 15:19  All the first-born males that come from your herd and from your flock, you shall set apart to Jehovah your God. You shall do no work with the first-born of your bull, nor shear the first-born of your sheep.

Deu 15:20  You shall eat before Jehovah your God year by year in the place which Jehovah shall choose, you and your household.

Deu 15:21  And if there is a blemish in it, lame, or blindness, or any ill blemish, you shall not sacrifice it to Jehovah your God.

Deu 15:22  You shall eat it inside your gates. The unclean and the clean shall eat it alike, as the gazelle, and as the hart.

Deu 15:23  Only you shall not eat the blood of it. You shall pour it on the ground like water.

You are to read the Torah out loud for all to hear.

Deu 31:9  And Moses wrote this Law and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and to all the elders of Israel.

Deu 31:10  And Moses commanded them, saying: At the end of seven years, at the set time of the year of release, in the Feast of Tabernacles,

Deu 31:11  when all Israel has come to appear before Jehovah your God in the place which He shall choose, you shall read this Law before all Israel in their hearing.

Deu 31:12  Gather the people, men and women and the little ones, and your stranger who is within your gates, so that they may hear and that they may learn and fear Jehovah your God, and be careful to do all the words of this Law,

Deu 31:13  and that their sons who have not known may hear and learn to fear Jehovah your God, as long as you live in the land where you go over Jordan to possess it.

In the original Hebrew, this biblical commandment is known as Hakhel {הקהל}, which means ‘assemble’ (as can be found in the verses above). This verb is derived from the Hebrew root K-H-L {ק-ה-ל}, which means a group of people who have assembled together and in Modern Hebrew Kahal also means audience and crowd.

From this Hebrew root (K-H-L) also derived the word ‘Kehilah'{קהילה}, which means community or congregation, and that is the reason it can be found in many synagogues and Jewish communities’ names. During biblical times, the king was the one who read selected segments of the Torah. Many people were assembled ( ‘Nikahlu’ {נקהלו} in Hebrew) and were the audience (‘Kahal’) for this public Torah reading.

    Shalom,
    Thank-you Joe for everything !
I have a question. Is the first Rosh Chodesh in the Shmita Year a High Sabbath?
I did not think it was. Just not sure.
A Joyous New Year to you!

Shalom Daniel, no Rosh Chodesh is not a Sabbath day nor a Holy Day. It is a big deal so that you know when the Holy Days are in the 1st and 7th months, but it is not a Holy Day as written in Lev 23.

As you are, I am of the understanding that there does not need to be an omer amount by the 1st day of the month to declare the new year, however my understanding is that one would need to know if it was the new year by the 10th day of the month when the lamb was to be chosen and set apart since that was also one of the requirements vs knowing by the time the lamb was slaughtered. Although there are no longer sacrifices taking place, why would the date for the selection of the lamb not come into play?

    Reply
    • Joseph F Dumond

Shalom Patricia, most of us will only be eating a lamb chop, so the lamb on the 10th day is not an issue. But lets say it is. This year we have 6 days until Wave Sheaf Day after the 14th. If the barley is not ready then all we have to do is wait one more month and do it all over again. But by then all the barley will be reseeded this year.

If on the other hand we do not keep this Passover and go for the next month. Should we realize we are wrong, we cannot go back and keep this Passover. We will have missed it.

You can only keep the second Passover if IF you touch a dead person or you are on a long trip. You cannot just have a do over because you made a mistake. You must keep it when it is supposed to be kept. So I will do this Passover and if I am wrong I can do the next one. But I cant skip this one then change my mind and try to make up for missing this one by keeping next month as the 2nd Passover.

I’m not sure if you are aware, but in England the last couple of days our stores have been almost empty of many vegetables and some major chains are limiting how much you can buy. There are major supply issues due to bad climate. It’s as though Jehovah is forcing the land not to produce.

Shalom Stuart, yes we just saw this on the BBC news. We have been telling our readers to stock up. It is time to get serious and know that the judgments are now coming on the world. It is time to stop playing the religion game and get serious about studying Torah.

And on the same day President Putin announces he is going to suspend Russia’s participation in the New Start treaty on Tuesday. He made clear that he would bar the United States from inspecting sites that house some of the 5,977 warheads owned by the Kremlin.

Thank you Mr Dumond for this updated newsletter. I felt like this was the new year, this month and not Next. This year the wave offering is six days after the 14th so that gives a few extra days for barley to develop as you pointed out above. I am so glad and grateful to be on this calendar. Praise the Lord. I just don’t understand why people resist the barely and sightedmoon calendar its a mystery. Hallelujah I am excited for these spring holy days.

Has there ever been Aviv barley this early on record? If not, what could this mean?
The early(ish) discovery would affect fall/winter feasts, making August as the 7th month; would it not?

    Thanks for this report.
Just like we need to have two witnesses for sighting the New Moon to start the new month, shouldn’t we have two witnesses also to verify that the Barley is Aviv to start the new year?
Are there any Biblical or historical references about having witnesses for barley search?

KDP paperbacks will eventually (usually after a couple months) show up in the listings of the India store, but at a very high price, because they have to be imported. Most Indian authors don’t try to sell KDP paperbacks in India. (They sell their paperbacks in the UK and the US and their ebooks everywhere.) Instead they get a local Indian printer to publish their paperbacks for the Indian market.

This is the best answer I am able to find as to why the softcover books are not on Amazon India.

If you are able to help me find a solution then please let me know.

I’m assuming that you were showing a range of possible dates.
Is “42” a typo and you meant: 34 to 52? If not then please explain how you came up with that calculation.
We are excitedly waiting for another report from Becca.

    Sincerely,

    Dean Heckathorn
