Joseph F. Dumond

Isa 6:9-12 And He said, Go, and tell this people, You hear indeed, but do not understand; and seeing you see, but do not know. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn back, and be healed. Then I said, Lord, how long? And He answered, Until the cities are wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land laid waste, a desolation, and until Jehovah has moved men far away, and the desolation in the midst of the land is great.

Shabbat Shalom Brethren,

It never ceases to amaze me how much opposition there is against this message of the Sabbatical and Jubilee years. And how it comes from places you do not expect. This week as I shared with as many new people who believed in Torah and those who believed in Jesus, I was banned by fb from replying to those who wrote me. And from sharing with others I was not friends with.

How on earth do you become friends with those you do not know unless you can contact them?

If any of you are on fb would you share this message with all that you can. Maybe if enough of us do this then we can be banned for 30 days and then fb would have no one talking on it.

Shalom, I am hoping you might consider my teaching about the Sabbatical and Jubilee years and how they teach us the end time prophecies and the order in which they come.

One lady wrote the following about the book at Amazon.com.

I picked up this book because I was interested in the topic of the sabbath year. However, I quickly discovered that, even though the author claims to just be a blue-collar worker with not much education, he has thoroughly researched all aspects of history and he has an incredible depth of knowledge of the Scriptures — and this book covers a lot more than just the sabbath year.

One thing I appreciated was the chronological listing of years and dates from creation to the present, with explanations of how to interpret the Bible’s history with secular history.

I thought the author’s explanation of why all Christians — no, all people in the world — should obey God’s commands, was one of the best I’ve seen.

This book personally convicted me, as it showed me areas where I’m careless in my obedience to God’s commands. In addition, he showed why it is so important for us to share this message with others. It is the very definition of “loving our neighbor as ourselves.”

In less than 7 years time we enter into the Sabbatical cycle known for war. That is 2017. ? It is the 4th curse of Lev 26. And Daniel teaches us that in the middle of this last Jubilee cycle, which is 2020, then the USA will be cut off. This is the subject of my next book at the editor now.?

Would you consider sharing this book with your friends. Here is a video trailer for the book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=L7Y5afZ3aY4?

I am writing to all those who keep Torah and to those who don’t as well. I know you keep Torah. Please consider this book and order it after Shabbat. Knowing when the Sabbatical year is and was is not the hard to do. It is explained in this book so that a 4th grader can understand. And I can tell, you are no longer a 4th grader.?

May Yehovah bless you as you consider His commandments of which keeping the Sabbatical Year is one very important one.

I am asking you all to share that message or one like it. Get the word out to as many of the brethren in all the various different groups and let them know about the Sabbatical year. War is coming and if you are not obeying Yehovah then you are in great danger.

Here is one ladies review after watching some of my other teachings. She is one of the many who wrote this week to say they are going to support this effort to get the teachings I am presenting on TV and in a series so the world can know these things.

Wow. Thank you so much Grandpa Joseph, I just finished watching all of these videos. Brilliant content. Mindboggling. And the finish was real totally unexpected as I didn’t think you could jaw drop me anymore.

I would love to see links for all that info just to verify further as unfortunately my lap top has limited sound so had to strain my ears to catch most of it. Could not see all the maps in great detail either. Some big print of the time line & dates would have been a bonus. But you did really well Joseph & I am baffled as to where you got to time to do all the research but God is faithful to those that earnestly seek him. But yes the most mindboggling part is that all this is hidden or forgotten about & not pieced together. It really makes fools of all the ‘intellectuals’ of the world that atheists because here is there proof that they are always looking for right in front of them.

You will be happy to know that I have cut back on my giving at my currently unscriptural church so I can give to you instead $50aud per month so you can get some quality videos happening etc.

Only just last week my Scottish friend was telling me all about the Picts & then your videos mentioned them. I will have to tell her that they are the American Indians. Although they have the dark hair & skin unlike Scottish people or did I get that bit wrong?

Anyway I would like to direct debit you some money so can you please give me the details? I hope to do this ongoing but let’s say 6mths for now.
Kind regards,
Y P Australia

Joe I am sending you a donation of $500 this week for this project … or if you are not able to move forward with it at this time, then use this donation as you see fit.

Shalom,
Tulsa OK

Dear Joseph,

Just to say that I sent the money through yesterday in Canadian dollars. I was pleasantly surprised to receive your Remembering the Sabbatical Years book two days ago. I love the cover it looks beautiful. Look forward to reading it, but your box file must come first. I hope you had a good response to your appeal. My family and I are keeping you in our prayers.
Shalom,

United Kingdom

Shalom Joseph,

May your NL 5849-010 move all the hearts as it had moved mine. I want really that the truth can be sent to millions of searching but still ignorant people and that they might be saved by doing the right thing and going the right way that is HIM.
I have sent by Western Union US $ about 500.

So you might use it for TV broadcast or books what you think is most needed or best.

Be blessed from everyone who is reading these letters but outmost from the heaven.
Asia.

Brethren I would like to tell the two men that are willing to help us by the end of May whether or not we are going to be able to do this. In order to do that I need to see enough of the funds come in that I can commit to them. Like I said they need to eat and this is what they do to provide for their families.

So please pray about this and consider helping us make it a reality. Now is the time to act. Now is the time to get this message out to the rest of those being called. 2017 begins the Sabbatical cycle of War. 2020 is the time according to Daniel 9:24-27 and The Prophecies of Abraham and the Prophecies of Niddah, and the Prophecies of Josephs 7 years of plenty and famine. 2020 keeps coming up as the time.

It is also the time of the beginning of the 2300 days. If I am understanding things correctly. All of this I will explain in these teachings of TV.

We will also be going through them at Sukkot this fall in Tennessee. If you are still considering joining us then you need to drop me a note so that I can forward you on the convener who will then send you the info you need to book a site.

You only have 5 months left until Sukkot. So get planning and we hope you can join us in Tennessee this fall and there you will learn about many of these teaching. And like the lady from Australia said, I plan on “jaw dropping” everyone there. Those who have previewed my next book know I am going to do this and I even have a few surprises to jaw drop them also with more information.

You do not want to miss this. And if you cannot come then we do need your help to get this information on TV so every one can know. Yes it is that stunning and that undeniable. Stunning even.

Well you please consider sponsoring us to get this info out. Now not in 7 years. It would be too late then. But help us NOW. Please.

I was out in my yard on Shabbat last week wondering what I was going to share with you all this week.

I was then shown this next article and I was floored. I had heard some of the things before so I should not have been so surprised. But I was dumbfounded.

As you all are aware I have been bragging just how blessed we are here in Canada during the great depression that has come on the USA and UK. A depression, which I warned you all about in the DVD, we made in 2005. Although many laughed at me at the time, six months later it did happen.

Canada went through those tough times rather as if the worldwide recession was a figment of someone’s imagination. I had so much work and I traveled to Israel 3 times year and bought equipment and prospered.

And as I post this, the news yesterday said that Canada had 4 banks in the top 10 of the strongest in the world| and I just so happen to deal with two of them. This is no small accomplishment consider the number if banks that have gone bankrupt since 2008 when this all began. http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story/2013/05/01/business-bloomberg-bank.html

On March 20, 2004 Stephen Harper became Prime Minister of Canada with a Minority government. Let me give you a little bit of history about Stephen Harper.

In 2002, he succeeded Stockwell Day as leader of the Canadian Alliance (the successor to the Reform Party) and returned to parliament as Leader of the Opposition. In 2003, he reached an agreement with Progressive Conservative leader Peter MacKay for the merger of their two parties to form the Conservative Party of Canada. He was elected as the party’s first non-interim leader in March 2004.

Harper’s Conservative Party won a stronger minority in the October 2008 federal election, showing a small increase in the percentage of the popular vote and increased representation in the Canadian House of Commons, with 143 of 308 seats. The 40th Canadian Parliament was dissolved in March 2011, after his government failed a no-confidence vote on the issue of the Cabinet being in contempt of parliament.[3]
In the May 2011 federal election, Harper’s Conservative Party won a majority government, the first since the 2000 federal election. His party won 166 seats, an increase of 23 seats from the October 2008 election.

IN 2010 Prime Minister Harper made this speech in standing up for Israel at the UN. I was never so proud to be Canadian as I was and because of the talk this man gave.

And Aljazeera has also some great footage to show. But remember this is Aljazeera reporting here.

In the 2008 book Eye for an Eye by William L Koenig speaking about the major disasters then hitting the USA Koenig writes,
What do these major record-setting events have in common?

• The ten costliest insurance events in U.S. history • The twelve costliest hurricanes in U.S. history • Three of the four largest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history • The two largest terrorism events in U.S. history

All of these major catastrophes and many others occurred or began on the very same day or within 24-hours of U.S. presidents Bush, Clinton and Bush applying pressure on Israel to trade her land for promises of “peace and security,” sponsoring major “land for peace” meetings, making major public statements pertaining to Israel’s covenant land and /or calling for a Palestinian state.

Are each one of these major record-setting events just a coincidence or awe-inspiring signs that God is actively involved in the affairs of Israel?

In this book, Bill Koenig provides undeniable facts and conclusive evidence showing that indeed the leaders of the United States and the world are on a collision course with God over Israel’s covenant land.

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem” (Zechariah 12:9)

As “America has done to Israel” by John McTernan is another book which shows the same thing. That is how US policy against the state of Israel has been met by serious disasters on the USA.

As our Prime Minister who represents Canadians stands up and defends Israel in the UN from many of the accusations that are overwhelmingly voted on against Israel, we here in Canada receive the blessings in our economy.

I do not often comment about various politics in any country. I have avoided being sucked into endless debates with those who love the intrigue of politics. But the pains that USA has suffered coinciding with the decisions they made against Israel cannot be ignored. And what is about to happen to Canada, the land I love cannot be ignored either.

I have marveled how throughout the world debacle on the banking crisis how Canada and our banks got by unscathed. How blessed I have been working in construction to have had so much work when the rest of the world is suffering from double digit unemployment and the majority of it in the housing industry in which I work.

But On April 14, 2013, Justin Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was not elected Prime Minister, but has now become the leader of the opposition. His Father was Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968 to June 4, 1979, and again from March 3, 1980 to June 30, 1984.

Trudeau began his political career as a lawyer, intellectual, and activist in Quebec politics. In the 1960s, he entered federal politics by joining the Liberal Party of Canada. He was appointed as Lester Pearson’s Parliamentary Secretary, and later became his Minister of Justice. From his base in Montreal, Trudeau took control of the Liberal Party and became a charismatic leader, inspiring “Trudeaumania”. From the late 1960s until the mid-1980s, he dominated the Canadian political scene and aroused passionate reactions. “Reason before passion” was his personal motto. He retired from politics in 1984, and John Turner succeeded him as Prime Minister.

Admirers praise the force of Trudeau’s intellect and salute his political acumen in preserving national unity against the Quebec sovereignty movement, suppressing a violent revolt, and establishing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms within Canada’s constitution. Critics accuse him of arrogance, economic mismanagement, and unduly favouring the federal government relative to the provinces, especially in trying to distribute the oil wealth of the Prairies.

Justin Trudeau has come to office on the popularity of His fathers success before he died. But……

That is not what is troubling me this day as I look at the political scene here in Canada for the future. No it is his belief’s that trouble me and that fact that he will most likely be the next Prime Minister and if not the next the one after that is of grave concern.

Of all the disasters that have happened around the world, virtually none have come on Canada. Of all the Terrorist attacks none have happened in Canada. They were caught before hand. But now I am expecting the protecting hand of Yehovah to be removed as the next Prime Minister Trudeau will move to go against the State of Israel and align us against Israel at every move as the pro anti Israeli and liberal forces gather steam and momentum around the world.

Yes you will then see terrorist attacks in Canada being completed successfully. You will also see disasters hit us from all directions and Tornadoes unlike anything we have ever had in history.

And we too will struggle to find the money to pay for our food and shelters.

What are Justin Trudeau’s foreign policy views, especially about the threat of Islamic terrorism?
Two years ago, Trudeau criticized the new citizenship guide for new immigrants, called Discover Canada. One passage in that guide book said, “Canada’s openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural practices that tolerate spousal abuse, ‘honour killings,’ female genital mutilation, forced marriage or other gender-based violence.”

Pretty tough to disagree with that. But Trudeau did. He said, “There needs to be a little bit of an attempt at responsible neutrality” by the Canadian government. Honour killings shouldn’t be called “barbaric,” he said.

Same thing nearly two weeks ago, when Peter Mansbridge asked Trudeau about the Boston bombings. His thoughts were not with the victims, but rather the perpetrators. “We have to look at the root causes,” he said. “But there is no question that this happened because there is someone who feels completely excluded … We also have to monitor and encourage people to not point fingers at each other.”
Three were dead and close to 200 injured, but Trudeau was more concerned about finger-pointing.

Another worrisome sign came last December, when Trudeau spoke at a Muslim conference in Toronto that was sponsored by IRFAN-Canada. That group had its charitable status stripped by the Canada Revenue Agency in 2011, which claims they used deceptive fundraising to send nearly $15 million to groups with ties to the terrorist group Hamas. In the subsequent media storm, IRFAN quit as a sponsor. But Trudeau accepted the invitation when they were part of it.

If Trudeau lacks foreign policy judgment, who are his advisers? One answer is his brother, Alexandre “Sacha” Trudeau. Sacha once wrote a bizarre column in the Toronto Star praising Fidel Castro, saying, “His intellect is one of the most broad that can be found … Combined with a Herculean physique and extraordinary courage, this monumental intellect makes Fidel the giant that he is.”

Sacha is a filmmaker. He made an anti-American movie, called Embedded in Baghdad. He made an anti-Israel movie called The Fence. And his latest masterpiece is called The New Great Game, about Iran’s courageous decision to defy America and Israel. Sacha made it in co-operation with Press TV, the state-run propaganda agency of Iran.

Sacha is like Justin — a spoiled dilettante. But Trudeau’s more serious adviser is Omar Alghabra, the Saudi-born former president of the Canadian Arab Federation who briefly served as an MP from Mississauga.

This month, Alghabra told Al Jazeera, “On the issue of Iran, Trudeau has clearly stated that he is for engagement.”
But that’s the thing. The world tried engagement for years. Iran played us for fools and kept building nuclear weapons. So now the world’s democracies are done engaging Iran. We’re desperately trying to stop them now with full-blown sanctions. But Trudeau wants to suddenly reverse course? To reward Iran with normalized relations?

Alghabra has extreme views. When he was president of the Canadian Arab Federation in 2004, he denounced Canada’s largest newspaper chain for using the term “terrorist” to describe Muslim terrorist groups like the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. He said that was a mere opinion, not a fact.

Alghabra wrote a letter to Toronto’s police chief in 2005 condemning the chief for participating in a charity walk for Israel, saying Israel was “conducting a brutal and the longest contemporary military occupation in the world.” In a letter to a journalist, he wrote the chief’s visit to Israel was comparable to visiting Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship.

When arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat died, Alghabra put out a press release announcing he was mourning for him. When Canada was setting up a no-fly list for passengers considered security threats, Alghabra opposed it.

And when Ontario narrowly rejected adopting shariah law for Muslim divorces, Alghabra was disappointed, calling it “unfortunate.”
Justin Trudeau’s instincts are wrong — on terrorism, on honour killings, on extremist groups.
But even scarier than his own instincts are those of his advisers.

And last just as I go to post still more news comes to light.

Canada is not going to seek a seat on the security council at the UN. You will read in the article I am now posting here that one of the reasons is because we no longer have the needed support to gain that seat. The support has moved away from us for our support of Israel. Can you believe it?

The UN who have attacked Israel at every chance they can and not a word against those who are attacking Israel with rockets and threats of annihilation, has moved away from supporting Canada at the UN security council. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/canada-wont-run-for-un-security-council-seat-in-2014/article11650813/

But when the Liberals win the next Election and Mr. Trudeau takes office that will all change. And so will our support of Israel and then you will see that disasters and sad situations invade this country.

Triennial Torah Cycle

Deut 16        1 Chronicles 17-18       1 Thess 1-3

Deut 16

Here, some of God’s seven annual festivals are listed and reviewed. The sacrifices that God later added to accompany these feasts are no longer in effect. The festivals themselves, however, are still to be observed.

Following the Passover, God commanded that the Israelites were not to eat leavened bread for seven days, but were to instead eat unleavened bread during that time (verses 3, 8). No leaven was to be seen among them in all their territory for those seven days (verse 4)—the Days of Unleavened Bread.

Seven weeks later, the Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost, was to be kept (verse 9). Next would be the Feast of Trumpets followed by the Day of Atonement, but neither are mentioned here—nor is the Last Great Day. However, the Feast of Tabernacles is specifically reviewed (verses 13-15). This does not mean that Trumpets, Atonement and the Last Great Day are no longer holy. Rather, God is listing here only the three seasons of His annual festivals, as can be seen in verse 16. The first season, early spring, includes Passover and Unleavened Bread; the next season, late spring approaching summer, refers to Pentecost, and the third season, late summer and fall, includes Trumpets, Atonement, Tabernacles and the Last Great Day (these feasts are all to be kept within a period of less than a month).

As part of the instructions for keeping His festivals, God also commanded that we come before Him with an offering during each of the three festival seasons (verse 16). Generally, the Israelites made three trips in order to worship together in the three festival seasons. Many of the offerings were produce or animals, so it may have been practical for families to turn over their offerings as soon as they arrived at the place of worship. However, since offerings today are usually in the form of money (checks, cash, etc.), and since God does command that we are not to “appear before Him” empty-handed, the Church in modern times has instituted a tradition of taking up offerings on each Holy Day, the days on which God specifically commands us to appear before Him in assembly for worship services.

Why did God specify only the males? It was assumed that each family was headed by a man, and the man presented the family’s offering. Even today, there is often just one offering from each family—though many parents encourage their children to each give a small amount in order to teach them the habit of giving to God.

Finally, it should be mentioned that God does not set any amount for us to give except that it be “according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you” (verse 17). Of course, this cannot mean that we are to put a “price tag” on all that God has given us and try to pay Him that—for we could never in a million lifetimes pay that much. Rather, it must refer to the clause in the first part of the same verse, that we are to give as we are able—or, more to the point, as God has enabled us.

Each of these three feasts show us part of the plan of Salvation that Yehovah has set in motion for us. It is in studying each of these three seasons that we learn so much about His plan and discording those false teachings we had in our former assemblies.

1 Chronicles 17 2 Samuel 7

These chapters tell of David’s desire to build a house for God—a temple, a more permanent structure than the tabernacle. God’s answer, through the prophet Nathan, is No. David later sheds additional light on this pronouncement. Notice that the material in these chapters is “according to all” that Nathan told David (1 Chronicles 17:15; 2 Samuel 7:17)—i.e., they don’t contain everything Nathan said. We can find more elsewhere. David explains in 1 Chronicles 22:8 and 28:3 that God told him that he is not permitted to build Him a permanent dwelling because he has been a warrior who has shed blood. Indeed, his entire reign is virtually one battle after another. This would not be fitting symbolism. The transfer of the ark from a tabernacle to the more permanent temple is to represent the Lord moving to this earth as an enduring dwelling—which will commence with the coming reign of Jesus Christ over all nations. This future reign of Christ, the Prince of Peace, will be over a peaceful world (see Isaiah 9:6-7). So, instead of David, God will have the temple built by David’s son Solomon, his name meaning “Peaceful,” who will, appropriately, reign over a period of peace. This is not to say that Solomon would not fight under certain circumstances. Rather, it will not be necessary because, by the end of David’s reign, God will at last give the Israelites rest from their enemies—which, again, is representative of God’s coming Kingdom.

God then speaks through Nathan of His plan to establish David’s house. David’s “house,” his royal dynasty, will be established forever. How will God go about this? In 2 Samuel 7, God tells David what will happen after his death: “I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom” (verse 12). This, of course, refers to Solomon. Notice verse 13: “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” We must be careful here, however, as the Hebrew word translated “forever,” olam, does not always carry the same meaning as “forever” does in the English language. Occasionally it means unending as long as certain conditions apply (compare Exodus 21:6; Jonah 2:6). Recorded elsewhere, there are definite conditions attached to the endurance of Solomon’s throne. Looking at 1 Chronicles 28 again, David expresses the condition God gives: “Moreover, I will establish his kingdom forever, if he is steadfast to observe My commandments and My judgments, as it is this day” (verse 7). This condition is later reiterated by God to Solomon himself (2 Chronicles 7:17-18, compare verses 19-22). So if Solomon lives in disobedience to God, his dynasty will not go on without end. Sadly, this will come to pass, as Solomon will eventually have his heart turned to following other gods (see 1 Kings 11:4).

So what is meant by 2 Samuel 7:14-15, where God says he will not remove his mercy from Solomon as he did with Saul, who disobeyed? As we’ve seen, it cannot mean that Solomon’s dynasty would never be cut off. Rather, it must mean that, in the event Solomon disobeys, he will not be killed by God as Saul was. Instead, he will be allowed to live out his life. Furthermore, though the kingdom will be torn from him and given to a neighbor as Saul’s was—this will not happen to Solomon himself. As God later tells Solomon: “Nevertheless I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David” (1 Kings 11:12).

Though Solomon’s dynasty is not prophesied to continue forever, that of David himself is. God says, “I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations'” (Psalm 89:3-4). In 2 Chronicles 13:5, we are told that “the LORD God of Israel gave the dominion over Israel to David forever, to him and his sons, by a covenant of salt.” Salt is a preservative against corruption and decay. It was required in offerings (Leviticus 2:13), which were often part of covenants. In using the phrase “covenant of salt,” then, God is denoting a permanent alliance, an inviolable covenant, established for “all generations.”
What this tells us is that this throne must be in existence in our generation. Some might suggest that Christ sits upon it now. After all, He is of the line of David—not through Solomon but through David’s son Nathan. Furthermore, Jesus is actually prophesied to sit on David’s throne. An angel tells Mary: “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33; compare Isaiah 9:6-7). But Christ never took over a throne in his human life. And since His death and resurrection, He has been in heaven, sharing His Father’s throne (compare Revelation 3:21). Yet He is coming back to rule Israel and all nations, as the book of Revelation goes on to show. It is at that time that He will fulfill the prophecy of at last assuming the throne of David.

So where is that throne, which must exist in “all generations,” in our day? Fascinatingly, we can trace the line of David through Solomon beyond ancient Israel and Judah all the way to the British monarchy today (see “The Throne of Britain: Its Biblical Origin and Future” at www.ucg.org/brp/materials). When Christ returns, the rule of the Solomonic line will finally cease, and Christ, of the line of Nathan (another of David’s sons), will take over the throne.

1 Chronicles 18 2 Samuel 8-9

Here we see David extending the dominion of Israel. God’s covenant with him included the promise that he would be victor over his enemies. Furthermore, in conjunction with his movement north, his purpose is directly stated: “to establish his power by the River Euphrates” (1 Chronicles 18:3). All of this expansion was, no doubt, carried out with God’s promise to Abraham firmly in mind—that the land God was giving him would extend “from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates” (Genesis 15:18). Perhaps he also had direct instructions from God that Scripture does not reveal.

Of defeated nations, the accounts explain that they became David’s “servants,” bringing tribute—that is, vassal states indirectly ruled by David. The conquest of one of these, Moab, may have been undertaken with mixed feelings—David’s great-grandmother Ruth having come from there (Ruth 4:13-17) and him having sent his own parents there to Moab’s king for protection while he hid from Saul (1 Samuel 22:3-4). Perhaps Moab had a new ruler at this time. Nevertheless, Moab was a pagan nation that had posed a serious danger to Israel in the past (see Numbers 25:1-3; Judges 3:12-30) and would do so repeatedly throughout Israel’s history.

In 2 Samuel 9, we read of David wanting to show the “kindness of God” (verse 3) to a son of Saul’s son Jonathan in fulfillment of David and Jonathan’s covenant of friendship (compare 1 Samuel 20:14-15). In learning of Jonathan’s crippled son (2 Samuel 4:4), David sends for him immediately. Mephibosheth has good reason to be afraid at this point, as the founders of new dynasties in ancient times often killed the children of former rulers to eliminate contenders for the throne. But David reassures him, promising to restore his family estate and that he will be like an adopted son, eating at the king’s table for the rest of his life.

Perhaps we can see in the story of Mephibosheth an illustration of our lives under God’s grace—going from nothing, undeserving of blessing, living under threat of danger, to complete security with royal treatment at the table of the King of the universe.

1 Thessalonians 1-3

The letters (called epistles) from Paul to Thessalonica, which included I Thessalonians and II Thessalonians were probably two of the earliest letters Paul had written which was around A.D. 50 or 51. Paul wrote these letters in response to Timothy’s report that the Thessalonians’ church was prospering despite intense persecution from factions. Unscrupulous men from the Jewish community had sent men to stir up animosity toward the Christians who they identified as straying from Judaism. These Jews stirred up a riot in which Paul, Silas, and Timothy had to flee for their lives during the middle of the night.

The residents and recipients of Thessalonica resided in a huge city with estimates of 200,000 citizens. Immorality abounded as the norm in the pagan Greek religions there. Today it might have been called “sin city.” Sitting in a prime spot of wealth and influence as the chief port of the Roman province of Macedonia, this city was one of the crown jewels of the Roman shipping and receiving centers and Roman citizens had many freedoms there because it had the status of a “free city.” That meant that Thessalonica citizens had self-rule. Thessalonica had many great influential citizens of Rome dwelling there since it was the provincial capital of Macedonia.

The purpose behind I Thessalonians is multifaceted. Part of Paul’s letter was to expose the false teachers in the church there. They were obviously in it for money and prestige. He was also disputing the false charge that he had left in a hurry because of a charge of hypocrisy that the false teachers had accused him of.

Paul was also interested in encouraging the Thessalonians in their persecutions and to strengthen their resolve for Jesus Christ and the gospel‘s sake. He wants the Thessalonians to understand that persecution was to be expected as part of the cost of their faith.
Paul’s practical instructions and exhortations are universally applicable throughout the church’s history even up to today. One of these were for the reasons of having godly conduct. They are to live to please God and not men and their conduct is to be motivated by a love for God. Pleasing God is also living a chaste life and avoiding sexual immorality as they are called to be holy just as God is holy. This was exceedingly more difficult in Thessalonica. Paul reinforced the idea that knowing God is an important way to avoid immorality and having godly conduct. Believers are called to holiness and that living a holy life glorifies God which is His will. Living a holy life is not possible by human effort but only by the power of an indwelling Holy Spirit.
